CANASTOTA, NY – The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is inviting members of the public to comment on a proposed plan to clean up a contaminated site located at 160 E. Center Street in the Village of Canastota.
The 2.56 acre site is currently owned by Madison County and will be the future location of a Pocket Neighborhood called “Old Erie Commons.” This proposed residential area will consist of of approximately 50 apartments and townhomes. A five-story building formerly occupied the site until it collapsed and was demolished in 2011. Assorted debris remains on the spot where the building once stood. The property has been deemed a brownfield by the NYSDEC and must be remediated before it can be redeveloped.
This cleanup and redevelopment project is a joint effort by the property owner, Madison County, and the developer, Housing Visions.
