Canal Street brownfield cleanup project
Beginning in April of 2026 National Grid will undertake an estimated $5.1 million program to clean up underground contaminants at the Canastota Department of Public Works facility on E. North Canal Street. The DPW facility sits on the site of a brownfield caused by a former manufactured gas plant which was in operation in the early 1900s and was acquired by the village in 1969.
This cleanup project is expected to take several months to complete. While work is underway, the DPW will relocate much of its equipment and operations to the former OCWA building on Deppoliti Ave. This project is funded by National Grid and any expenses incurred by the village which are related to the temporary relocation will be reimbursed.
In order to minimize disruptions we ask that anyone with questions for the DPW contact the village office at (315) 697-7559 or village@canastota.com.
