The Old Erie Canal waterway is a historic, recreational, and economic asset that runs through the downtown core of the Village of Canastota. While recent and planned investments are enhancing the Canal’s role as a destination, persistent water quality issues detract from its aesthetic appeal as a downtown destination and its recreational use as part of the Empire State Trail and Old Erie Canal State Historic Park. To support revitalization goals of this asset, Madison County in coordination with the Village of Canastota, retained Colliers Engineering & Design to evaluate water quality conditions and develop feasible improvement options. While this analysis focuses on approximately 1.5 miles of the Old Erie Canal within the Village of Canastota limits, many of the recommendations could be applied elsewhere along this 36 mile Old Erie Canal waterway system. We invite all canal-side communities and those with an interest in the 36 mile Old Erie Canal waterway to attend this presentation.
